Jonathan Borofsky “Walking to the Sky”

The tallest piece ever to grace Rockefeller Center except for the Christmas tree, “Walking to the Sky” was a 90 foot cantilevered stainless steel pole complete with fiberglass figures and was a very difficult piece to lift into place. A specially designed concrete frame was embedded in 100,000 lbs of concrete to serve as ballast so the piece would not turn over. To soften the look of this huge concrete mass, stairs were carved into the concrete, which allowed the public access to the piece.
