Jeff Koons “Puppy”

The 33 foot tall topiary terrier was a very challenging piece due to its weight and very time consuming installation. In order to distribute the 150,000 lb sculpture we designed a structural concrete base that also allowed for drainage while not overpowering the piece. We also designed an irrigation system that would equally distribute water to all areas covered by thousands of flowers of multiple varieties. The most challenging part was building a sculpture in two weeks, which normally takes six weeks. We achieved this through modifying concrete or gunite sprayers (used for pool construction) to spray soil in to the skeleton frame of “Puppy” opposed to shoveling it in by hand. We also invented a tool that would dig the holes for the 100,000+ flowers.
