Chris Burden “What My Father Gave Me”
Every child’s dream - a 54’ tall erector set in the shape of a building. This piece tested the laws of engineering. The piece was located adjacent to 5th Ave, directly across from Saks Fifth Ave Department store. Every precaution and safety factor was taken to design this piece and attempt what has never been done before. A test lift was performed in Northern California prior to its lift in NYC. The erector set pieces could not support its own weight laterally so a tubular steel box was built around the piece. The steel box was lifted and once vertical, the erector set was bolted to a concrete platform and the box was removed in two pieces.
