Anish Kapoor “Sky Mirror”

The location of this piece was critical as its reflective quality was equivalent to a mirror. A sunlight study was completed in order to determine where the piece could be placed with the least amount of sunlight hitting the surface. The location was challenging - we spanned a decorative landmarked fountain with steel beams and placed the piece on top of the fountain, adjacent to a very busy 5th avenue sidewalk. A structural and faux concrete base was built around the fountain to protect and conceal it. The “pedals” of the circular mirror were extremely difficult to crane in to place with its extremely tight tolerances. A 30-ton crane positioned on 5th avenue lifted each piece in to place over a seven night period. When it was completed, the piece appeared like a seamless mirror.
