Orchid Show

The skating rink at Rockefeller Center was transformed in to a tropical paradise at this yearly show organized by the Greater New York Orchid Society. This annual judged show is the largest orchid show in America with the most incredible exhibits and some of the rarest orchids in the world. In order to house this exhibition with over 150,000 attendees, Glenn Mahoney designed a space on the ice skating rink, and capped it with a 135-foot long tent; which yielded a 55-foot ceiling height for the show. This was achieved through incredible engineering that enabled the United Nations flagpole bases to be utilized as the ballast for the tent. This strategy provided column-free space on the rink level and virtually unlimited ceiling height for displays.
